Walmart shoplifting suspect claims she stole food after being turned away at food banks

A Umatilla woman will appear in court next week for stealing food from Walmart because she could not afford anything other than drinks.

A loss prevention employee of Walmart, located at 2501 Citrus Blvd., used surveillance cameras to catch 26-year-old Brittany Johnson and her two family members shoplifting around 1:50 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, according to a case report from the Leesburg Police Department.

An officer met with loss prevention in their office where the employee explained Johnson and her family were concealing food in her purse. Once he said this, the family was distraught in tears. They advised that they were so hungry and paid for everything they could. They took only food items because they were hungry and had been turned away from local food banks, the report said…
