“Dopesick” author Beth Macy announces congressional bid

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Journalist Beth Macy launched her campaign for Virginia’s 6th District House seat in downtown Roanoke Tuesday night.

“I think the crowd really wants to hear that somebody wants to stand up and fight for regular people, not just billionaires,” she said in an interview after the launch event. “We need to protect our Medicaid, we need to protect our SNAP programs, we need to protect our vulnerable people and I’m ready to go to work.”

Macy’s announcement comes after Virginia’s blue wave on election day, but if she wins the primary, she’s posed against republican incumbent Rep. Ben Cline who’s held down the seat since 2019.

A large crowd gathered to hear Macy and a lineup of other speakers, including Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb, Rev. Dr. Bill Lee, and Virginia farmer and factory worker Andrew Tait.
