Sioux Falls Police provide update on fraud campaign

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Sioux Falls Police Department said their fraud campaign targeting cryptocurrency ATMs has helped one person prevent losing money.

At Thursday’s police briefing, Sioux Falls Police Spokesman Sgt. Aaron Benson said an officer received a call earlier this week from a woman who was contacted from someone pretending to be a sheriff’s deputy from the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office. She said the caller told her she had signed a certified letter and missed jury duty and that she would need to withdraw money from her account and deposit it into a crypto ATM.

The woman went to the bank, withdrew the money, and was instructed by the caller to go to a specific crypto ATM at a gas station. The woman grew suspicious and just before she put the money into the machine, saw the sign posted by the police department. The woman ended the call and took the money back to the bank…
