TACOMA, Wash. — A rollback on renter protections is in the works in Tacoma as city officials look to bring balance to what they call the unintended consequences of a voter initiative known as the “Tenant Bill of Rights.”
Officially known as the Landlord Fairness Code Initiative (LFCI), the ballot measure was passed in 2023 for the purpose of protecting families and tenants as well as reducing homelessness.
LFCI included some of the strongest renter protections in the state by capping fees on late rental payments, banning winter or school-year evictions, and requiring landlords to pay relocation costs to tenants if they increased rent by 5% or more…
