Gang violence spikes in Burke County, leading to joint police effort

BURKE COUNTY, Ga (WJBF)- In recent weeks, there has been an uptick in gang related violence in Burke County. Now the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and the Waynesboro Police Department are teaming up to put an end to it.

Over the last week, the violence ramped up in Burke County with the shooting death of one man at Sunoco gas station. Several retaliatory shootings followed, one that resulted in the injuries of three more people. Sheriff Alfonzo Williams said enough is enough.

“If you looked at the house from this shooting just Sunday night. Look, I’ve worked hundreds of violent crime cases and I’m not easily impressed. It was bad. Somebody took a rifle and pumped 30 plus rounds into an apartment where four people were contained in a room and it looked like something from a war zone,” Sheriff Williams said.

Sheriff Williams told NewsChannel 6 that gang members range in age from around 12 years old to 24 years old. He said they need little to no excuse to go after each other. It could be over something as simple as a look one person gave to another…
