Waynesboro restaurant operator jailed on embezzlement charges

WAYNESBORO — A Waynesboro restaurant operator, already in legal trouble after being hit with several charges last summer, now finds himself behind bars after recently being indicted on additional charges.

Calvin “Trey” Wilkerson III, 40, of Crozet, is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail in Verona. He runs The Barn Restaurant, located at 408 East Main Street in Waynesboro. Wilkerson, who first opened the restaurant across the street in 2022 before moving to its current address in 2023, is accused of not paying food and beverage taxes for several months earlier this year.

According to a court filing by Waynesboro Commonwealth’s Attorney David Ledbetter, Wilkerson, who operates the eatery under CEWIII BURGERS, LLC, is required by city code to collect a 7% food and beverage tax on each sale. On the 20th of each month, he’s then supposed to file taxes from the previous month with Commissioner of Revenue Sabrina Von Schilling, with a 3% discount provided the taxes are paid on time…
