Driver charged with murder in shooting of Tampa DJ, despite self-defense claim

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A driver who claimed self-defense in the shooting of a well-known local DJ is now facing a charge for second-degree murder, Tampa police said Thursday night.

Joel Moreno Cobo, 31, was arrested Thursday night in connection with the Nov. 14 incident in Ybor City, according to the police department.

Officers said despite Cobo’s initial claims, they determined that the victim, Dedrick Sykes, 41, was not armed and did not make any threats before he was shot by Cobo.
