National Children’s Grief Awareness Day was Thursday, and during his weekly news conference, Erie Mayor Joe Schember addressed the issue.
Mayor Schember said that it’s important to realize that grief can span across all ages, and it impacts everyone differently.

The mayor was joined by Conor Dawley, the Erie education coordinator for Highmark Caring Place, who said that they were going everywhere throughout the community Thursday to show support and raise awareness.
“We’re all around the community today,” Dawley said. “You’ll see schools having assemblies, pep rallies, wearing blue, doing art exhibits, filling out butterflies in memory of their loved one.”

“It’s one of the really big things,” Schember said. “I know, of course, I’ve lost my parents, and I know, pretty much still, it’s probably been 20 years, but I still think about them every day, and I’m sure other people go through the same sort of thing. It’s hard to leave loved ones.”…
