GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The future of a beloved antique warehouse in downtown Grand Rapids is now in doubt.
Every antique has a story inside the old Sligh Furniture Co. building at 445 Century Ave. near Logan Street, but the building itself may be the biggest one of all. The building is steeped in Grand Rapids history as the antique warehouse was once a furniture manufacturer nearly 150 years ago. But now, the tenants who fill the three shops may be forced out.
“This is my pride. This is my joy. I enjoy doing this,” said Jim Murray, the owner of Century Antiques. “I don’t want to close. I want to be here. We all want to be here.”
For 25 years, Murray has sold treasures in the creaky aisles. He is passionate about old furniture and the stories each item holds. For many, the antique warehouse is their livelihood, with well over 100 vendors across the three stores.
