SWVA law enforcement gather for procession to honor fallen corrections officer

INDEPENDENCE, Va. (WFXR) – It’s a day nobody in law enforcement enjoys: remembering someone killed in the line of duty. Hundreds of officers from various jurisdictions, accompanied by members of multiple fire and EMS units, gathered outside the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Roanoke for a procession.

This one was to pay respects to 40-year-old Jeremy Lewis Hall, who was reportedly killed by an inmate while working at River North Correctional Center in Independence.

“Everyone loved him, and people say that sometimes in the aftermath of a tragedy, but it was genuine here,” Chad Dotson, the director of the Virginia Department of Corrections, said. “He came with a smile every day, and he was the first one at River North Correctional Facility every day, and he’d back into his parking spot, the same one every day.”

For those from the Department of Corrections, it was a mix of emotions.

“I’m mad, I’m sad, and we’re all in mourning,” Dotson said. “But it’s an honor to be able to stand and wear this logo and represent men and women that do the right thing when no one’s watching.”…
