Classroom court puts Big Bad Wolf in the hot seat

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Big Bad Wolf found himself back in the hot seat Thursday, but instead of facing the likes of Little Red Riding Hood or the Three Little Pigs, he stood trial before a classroom full of Flour Bluff Hornets armed with backpacks, notebooks and judgements.

The annual mock trial is designed to give students a hands-on introduction to the legal system: how courts work, what due process looks like and why evidence matters. It also offers them a chance to sit where few kids do — behind the bench, beside the witness stand and in the jury box.

It was the fourth year students stepped into real courtroom roles, teaming up with judges, court reporters, marshals and jurors to weigh the fairy-tale figure’s fate. The mock trial changes every year: sometimes the wolf ends up guilty, and other times he walks free. This time, it all came down to the evidence, and the kids were ready to press him on it…
