A historic landmark in a Houston suburb is about to change in a big way

SUGAR LAND, Texas — One of Sugar Land’s most recognizable landmarks is a step closer to restoration. City leaders have approved a contract to begin preservation work on the 100-year-old Imperial Sugar Char House, a major milestone in the long-term redevelopment of the Imperial Historic District.

On Wednesday, the City Council authorized a $496,000 design services agreement with Houston-based Urbano Architects. According to the city, the work will focus on the repairs needed to keep the aging industrial structure standing, including roof, window and structural stabilization, as the Char House begins its transition toward future reuse.

“Preserving the Char House is about more than saving a building. It is about honoring Sugar Land’s history and the generations who built this community,” said Mayor Carol McCutcheon. “This work prepares the Char House for future redevelopment and ensures that generations of Sugar Landers can continue to experience a tangible piece of our city’s story as we shape its next chapter.”
