A routine traffic stop in Grand Island Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a Florida man and the seizure of more than 14 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, according to police. Officers pulled over 56-year-old Charlie Red of Hialeah, Florida, around 5 p.m. near Capital Avenue and Sycamore Street after observing him speeding through a residential neighborhood and failing to use a turn signal.
The stop was conducted by Officer Corbin DeMay, who handles police K-9 Mando. During the investigation, officers discovered Red did not have a valid driver’s license. Further inspection led to the discovery of the large quantity of drugs. Red was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, driving without a license, and speeding 6 to 10 miles per hour over the limit.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott called the seizure a significant success and credited the department’s canine program—largely funded through community donations—for its vital role.
