MAILI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Department and Department of the Prosecuting Attorney look to reduce crime in West Oahu by implementing the notorious “Safe and Sound” program.
City and County officials joined Interim Chief Rade Vanic and Prosecuting Attorney Steven Alm at Nanikai Beach Park on Friday, Nov. 21, to discuss how the initiative would improve the overall wellness of the westside community.
HPD launches ‘Lights of Aloha’ campaign to promote service and safety
The program has shown progress since its launch in the Waikiki area in September 2022.
According ot the Honolulu Police Department, in just two years (September 2022 to September 2024), the Waikiki district saw the following reductions in crime:
- 48% drug and alcohol related offenses
- 19% in robberies
- 30% in burglaries
- 22% in criminal property damage
The Waikiki Business Improvement District adds that since the program’s implementation, “over 200 individuals have been restricted from Waikiki due to their criminal activities.”…
