Knox County Schools recognized for academic growth with ‘advancing’ district status

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Knox County Schools has received the one of the Tennessee Department of Education’s highest designations, reflecting a rapid rise from when it was rated among the state’s lowest performing districts just three years ago.

Knox County has been now recognized as an “Advancing” district based on high performance on metrics like academic proficiency, growth in student learning, chronic absenteeism, college-and-career readiness, and support for English Language Learners in the previous school year.

Districts are classified into one of five levels: Exemplary, Advancing, Satisfactory, Marginal, or In Need of Improvement. The 2024-2025 school year was also the fourth straight year the district made improvements in every tested subject area— ELA, math, science, and social studies.
