Halong evacuees, SCI Alaska support relief efforts with hunting trip

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – In addition to washing away many of their homes and worldly possessions, the devastation that former Typhoon Halong wrought upon southwestern Alaska last month had another effect on the residents it displaced: the loss, or at least temporary suspension, of hunting traditions that went back centuries.

“The flood pretty much devastated all of us,” Kipnuk resident Jonathan Carl said. “In that timeframe we lost a lot of game and subsistence.”

Recently, however, Carl, along with four fellow Kipnuk residents and guides from the Alaska Chapter of Safari Club International, got a chance to go hunting once again…
