Rising rent pushing families into new school districts, leaving children without support

GROVEPORT, Ohio (WSYX) — As rent prices continue climbing across Ohio, many families are being forced to make difficult decisions, including relocating to new school districts. One Columbus-area mother says she had no choice but to make the move, and the change is now putting her son’s education and safety at risk.

Atara Towns relocated from Canal Winchester to Groveport Madison Schools after her rent surpassed what her Section 8 voucher would cover.

“I’m on a fixed income. I have Section 8, and where I was living, they maxed it out,” Towns said. “Now it’s impacting his life. It’s impacting his education. It’s impacting me.”

Towns’ child left struggling

Her 11-year-old son, Tayden, is on both an IEP and a 504 plan. At his former school in Canal Winchester, Towns said staff provided exceptional support, including occupational therapy, counseling through Nationwide Children’s Hospital, special transportation, and a specialized classroom at Indian Trails Elementary that helped him make significant academic progress…
