New Bedford and Massachusetts State Police Ramp Up Efforts Against Illegal Scooters, Make Multiple Arrests

The New Bedford Police Department is intensifying its crackdown on illegal scooters and mopeds, partnering with the Massachusetts State Police to carry out a joint operation that resulted in multiple arrests and citations. Illegal scooter and moped activities have been linked to significant safety hazards and have given rise to numerous quality-of-life complaints among residents, leading to this concerted effort by law enforcement. Chief Jason Thody emphasized the operation’s impact, stating, “Our priorities are the safety of our residents and the overall quality of life in our neighborhoods. We will continue to aggressively focus on issues like this one that directly impact our community.” In the recent operation conducted on Thursday, the collaboration between local and state law enforcement led to 12 arrests, 13 towed vehicles, and 64 citations. The use of various units, including the K9 Unit and Air Wing, underscored the comprehensive nature of the crackdown. During the operation, law enforcement officials from both the New Bedford detectives and the State Police were effectively mobilized. New Bedford detectives alone made three arrests and towed three scooters and mopeds.
