NYSDOT unveils snowplow simulator for training drivers

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — What if job training was as easy as playing a video game? That’s the mindset behind the New York State Department of Transportation’s new snowplow simulator.

The mobile unit contains a small switchboard and a joystick, all things a snowplow operator needs to know how to use when on the job. Officials said the idea for the simulator came about when the state modernized the technology inside the plows.

It allows instructors to train drivers on the new technology from the safety of a trailer before they have to go out in dangerous conditions.

“If you think about what we do for the state, we’re 24/7 to keep our roads safe,” NYSDOT Equipment Operator Instructor Steven Kane said. “We’re here to maintain the roads. Not only for just the general public, but if you think about it — for the police, fire, emergency vehicles. And like I tell people all the time, the safest place to be is behind one of these trucks in a snowstorm.”…
