Suspect in death of WakeMed Garner officer released from hospital, taken to jail: Police

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — The suspect in the deadly shooting of a WakeMed Garner officer earlier this month was taken to the Wake County Detention Center Friday on a murder charge, police said.

WakeMed Campus Police Officer Roger Smith, 59, was shot and killed on Nov. 8 around 9 a.m. inside the lobby of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex on U.S. 70. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Benji Martin Jr., who is charged with murder in Smith’s death, according to the Garner Police Department.

Police said Martin was also shot during a struggle in the lobby and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He remained under medical supervision for nearly two weeks after the incident.

On Friday, police said Martin had been released from the hospital and transported to the Wake County Detention Center.

According to court records, Martin was not given bond. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Wake County Court next Monday, Nov. 24…
