Acworth man sentenced to life without parole for murdering neighbors

MARIETTA — Acworth resident Matthew Lanz will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he was convicted of murdering his neighbors, a Cherokee County firefighter and his wife, in 2021.

On Friday, Cobb Superior Court Judge Sonja Brown sentenced Lanz to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. The sentencing was delivered in front of a packed courtroom filled with family members, friends and coworkers of victims Justin and Amber Hicks.

In total, Lanz received two life-without-parole sentences, plus an additional life sentence, plus 20 years, plus 12 months to serve in confinement, all to be served consecutively…
