ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – Pumpkins for Pigs is a Virginia-based nonprofit that offers an alternative to throwing away your pumpkins and other holiday decorations.
According to officials, Pumpkins for Pigs aims to reduce food waste in our communities by diverting viable foodstuffs, including pumpkins, to farms, animal sanctuaries, and rescues for feed or compost.
You can donate any of the following items to Pumpkins for Pigs:
- Pumpkins
- Produce (fruits, vegetables)
- Gourds
- Evergreen wreaths and trees
- Dry goods
- Pastries
- Bread
- Straw
- Corn stalks
- Hay
- Brewer’s grain
- Outdoor plastic playhouses
- Kiddie pools
Officials note that donations must be free of sprays, dyes, mold, and decorations, including inks, paints, gemstones, and glitter, to ensure the animals’ health and safety.
