Tips to prevent fires this Thanksgiving

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – With Thanksgiving just days away, Amarillo fire officials are reminding families to take extra care in the kitchen and outdoors as they prepare holiday meals.

Community educator with the Amarillo Fire Department, Jason Love, said the most common calls during the holidays are from unattended cooking. He said families often get distracted with family members, step away from the kitchen, and return only after smoke or flames have already spread.

What food is safe for babies to enjoy on Thanksgiving?

“You never know when it starts, and so a lot of times you don’t know until the house is full of smoke,” Love said. “A lot of times, the fire has already gotten into the walls, which then runs up the entire length of the structure, causing big problems, so that’s why the unattended cooking is really such a big hazard for people.”

Love also warned about the risks associated with turkey fryers, which continue to cause injuries and property damage. According to AFD, many fryer-related fires happen when people overfill the pot with oil or place a partially frozen turkey into hot oil…
