Seconds To Spare As Fort Bend Deputy Drags Woman From Grand Parkway Ledge

With traffic racing along the Grand Parkway and Westpark Tollway below, a Fort Bend County deputy grabbed a 21-year-old woman off an overpass ledge on Tuesday, pulling her to safety just seconds before she could jump, officials said. Body-camera video later released by the constable’s office shows the deputy steadying the woman, bracing her against the rail, and holding her as she sobs. Deputy Terrence Greene stayed with her until crisis teams arrived, after radioing for mental health backup, as reported by KHOU.

According to KHOU, Greene rolled up after a radio call and spotted the woman on the Grand Parkway (State Highway 99) overpass with one leg already swung over the barrier. In the footage, he is heard talking to her in a calm voice, coaxing her away from the edge before lunging in, pulling her back, and wrapping her in a long embrace to keep her grounded. KHOU reports Greene stayed put until the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Crisis Intervention Team reached the scene and took over her care.

Precinct 1 Constable Chad Norvell publicly praised Greene’s actions, calling him the kind of quiet hero who shows up when it matters most. “True heroism isn’t loud, it’s the calm voice, the steady hand and the compassion that pulls someone back from the edge,” Norvell wrote on social media, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. The constable’s office released the body-cam video and highlighted Greene’s quick, low-key response.

Crisis Response And Where To Get Help

Officials said Greene immediately called for mental health professionals once the woman was safe and refused to leave her side until they arrived. Tiffany Bittner of the Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD told KHOU that overwhelming feelings of despair are more common than many people realize and urged anyone struggling to reach out for help. The report also notes that confidential support is available by calling or texting 988.

Overpass Incidents And Seasonal Risk

Precinct officials have warned that suicide attempts on highway overpasses often tick up around the holidays, a pattern the constable’s office flagged in its social media post about the incident, according to FOX 26 Houston. Local outlets shared the video to show how patrol deputies and crisis teams work together in real time to keep people safe on high-speed roadways…
