RI housing leaders say new federal rules could mean an increase in homelessness

WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Housing advocates in Rhode Island are raising red flags over new federal funding rules just announced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

They warn these changes could push more people into homelessness, as more than a thousand Rhode Islanders could lose housing under the new rules.

Officials say the Harold Lewis House in West Warwick, which houses 14 people, is an example of permanent supportive housing at its best, connecting residents to critical services they need.

But Friday morning, the president and CEO of Crossroads Rhode Island, Michelle Wilcox, warned that the home’s residents could lose their housing if proposed federal changes take effect.
