Thanksgiving is approaching, but the fog is already here

Fog is in the forecast, and a lot of it. A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Saturday for visibilities at or below 1/4 mile in the San Joaquin Valley, and we will probably see more of those issued nightly for the next week.

You need both long, clear, cool nights and moist air to form fog in the San Joaquin Valley. We’re about one month away from the shortest day of the year (the Winter Solstice), so our nights are definitely long enough. And, boy has it rained recently! With 2.86″ of rain so far this month, this is now Fresno’s 4th wettest November ever. Add that to our 13th wettest September ever, and the beginning of this year’s rain season is one for the books… 4.04″. It’s Fresno’s wettest ever start to a rain season (through November 22nd). High pressure will send the jet stream northward for the next week, so everything is in place for dense fog in the Valley for the next week, including Thanksgiving…
