‘Sanding Ovations’ gravity-defying sculptures return to Treasure Island Beach

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. (WFLA) — The sands on Treasure Island came alive once again this weekend for the 16th annual Sanding Ovations, bringing a surreal open-air art gallery right to the shore.

“The people see this and it’s something that they take with them the rest of their lives, so one of these pieces is gonna touch them somehow like a song and they’ll never forget about it,” said Dan Doubleday, the creator and sculptor behind the annual festival.

More than a dozen sand sculptures decorate the beach this year. Doubleday said that after last year’s hurricane forced a cancellation, organizers invited sculptors back under an anything-goes theme: “Gallery of Sand.”…
