UNCW Department of Theatre delights in comedy ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’

Utter chaos has arrived at UNCW. The Department of Theatre’s two-weekend production of Mischief Theatre’s “The Play That Goes Wrong” kicked off Thursday evening, and laughs are sure to be had by anyone choosing to attend.

This fantastic comedy is a play within a play, with fellow UNCW actors portraying, well, actors. Set at the small-scale Cornley Drama Society’s opening night of “The Murder at Haversham Manor,” Chris Bean (played by Henry Clickner) attempts to lead his cast and crew in the biggest production they have ever done… if you could call it that. From start to finish, everything that could possibly go wrong happens, hence the name. Props fall from the wall, words are mispronounced, sound cues play at the wrong times and the cast still has yet to find Winston the dog.

When Charles Haversham (played by Jonathan Harris (played by Jackson G. Cooper)) [SC1] is murdered on the night of his engagement party, Inspector Carter (Chris Bean’s character) attempts to investigate, alongside Charles’ brother Cecil (played by Max Bennett (played by Kevin Kosicki)), his fiancé Florence Colleymoore (played by Sandra Wilkinson (played by Ava Emerson Buckley)), her brother Thomas (played by Robert Grove (played by Jadoryon Nicholas)) and the manor butler Perkins (played by Dennis Tyde (played by Callum Bridgers)). However, any attempt at doing something right in this opening production is ultimately met with failure…
