Sun Prairie PD automatic license plate readers concern some residents

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) – The Sun Prairie Police Department’s automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) are bringing up privacy concerns for some residents.

The police department uses ALPRs on its squad cars and, more recently, has begun installing them on utility poles around town.

The cameras are made by Flock Safety and can act as an extra pair of eyes for police, according to Assistant Chief Ryan Cox of the Sun Prairie Police Department.

“Those cameras act effectively as an immediate force multiplier,” said Assistant Chief Cox. “Whether it’s a wanted car, a car used in a violent felony, or put onto a hot list for a recent crime that had just occurred.”…
