BR Zoo houses oldest southern cassowary in country

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Southern cassowaries are not from Louisiana. They come from the tropical rainforest of Northeast Australia and New Guinea. They look like a combination of a dinosaur, emu, and turkey.

The oldest pair in the United States is located in Baton Rouge at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Grody and her brother Hondo have been calling Louisiana home for over 40 years. The birds were born at the Denver Zoo in 1982. They came to Baton Rouge shortly after they were born.

AJ Blondeau is a bird keeper at the zoo. She has been taking care of Grody for 6 months…
