HONOLULU (KHON2) — With New Year’s Eve just weeks away, and after last year’s deadly Aliamanu fireworks explosion, the Department of Law Enforcement held its final fireworks buyback event of the year in Waipahu on Sunday, Nov. 23.
State officials say this was the last chance for residents to legally dispose of illegal fireworks before holiday enforcement ramps up.

The Department of Law Enforcement said over 700 pounds of fireworks were turned in, no questions asked and nearly $2,300 in gift cards was given out.
“We have some commercial-grade things that were brought in, a few hundred pounds of aerials,” Lambert said. “This is everyone’s last chance to comply with the law. After this it’s going to be strictly enforcement-based interactions with the community.”…
