Deadly horse virus outbreak in Texas causing concern for Houston-area horse owners, ranchers

HUMBLE, Texas — Veterinarians and horse owners across Texas are raising the alarm about a growing outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1, known as EHV-1.

The Texas Department of Agriculture said veterinarians began reporting cases of EHV-1 after a barrel racing event in Waco earlier this month. As of now, the Equine Disease Communication Center reports 11 confirmed cases in Texas, though experts warn that number is likely to rise.
