Sheriff Garry McFadden doubles down on US Border Patrol’s Charlotte operation, calls agency’s counter-messaging ‘word salad’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden is calling last week’s mixed messaging about the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol’s status in Charlotte, “word salad.”

Mixed reactions from Charlotte-area leaders on “Operation Charlotte’s Web”

McFadden confirmed Thursday that the federal agency’s “Operation Charlotte’s Web” was over and agents were leaving town. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security countered the statement, saying they were still in town.

The sheriff doubled down when asked about it on Monday.

“Of course, there they have left town,” he said, noting there is a permanent DHS office in south Charlotte. “They want people to believe that they haven’t left town. If they haven’t left town, they are talking about administrative work. And so technically, if they are doing administrative work at the Tyvola office, then those people have not left town.”

McFadden said there are still violent offenders still at large that would have been targets under the operation.
