Gramma the tortoise, oldest animal at the San Diego Zoo, dies

(KSWB/KUSI) — Gramma, a Galapagos tortoise that was the oldest living animal at the San Diego Zoo, has died.

The zoo said Gramma had ongoing bone conditions and that caretakers had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to the legendary resident of the zoo.

Gramma arrived at the zoo between 1928 and 1931, but she was already several decades old. A Facebook post by the zoo announcing her death said she may have been 141 years old, which would make her birth year around 1884.
