National Guard still staffing NY prisons months after strike

Nine months after a wildcat strike by correction officers, more than 2,700 National Guard members remain on duty at New York state prisons, according to WSYR. Officials say they’re helping as part of a “recruit, recover, rebuild” effort.

To fix staffing shortages, the state lowered the hiring age to 18 and introduced bonuses for sign-ons, referrals, and retention. Still, the state announced this week it will close Bare Hill Correctional Facility in March 2026 to consolidate resources.
