MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton said Monday that any plan to replace the aging Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar would largely fall on local leaders — not the state.
Sexton, who spoke after attending U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s news conference in the Bluff City on the Memphis Safe Task Force, was asked whether Tennessee would help fund a new county jail.
“Well, the new jail is up on the locals to do that locally,” Sexton said. “On the state level, we’re willing to fund a state jail to do more, more things.”…
