Downtown Madison’s Future: City Seeks Local Residents’ Input on New Area Plan

The City of Madison’s Planning Division has started the Downtown Area Plan as part of the Envision Downtown Madison project. This project is a partnership between the City and Downtown Madison, Inc. (DMI). The goal is to plan for the future of downtown Madison. The project includes two main efforts: the City’s Downtown Area Plan and DMI’s Greater Downtown Economic Investment Strategy, also called the Downtown Strategy.

The Downtown Area Plan will guide future growth, public policy, and investment. It builds on the 2012 Downtown Plan. Since 2012, downtown Madison has added new homes, more businesses, and improved transportation, such as the Bus Rapid Transit system. The city is also considering new projects, including a possible Amtrak station and redevelopment of state office buildings.

Both the Downtown Area Plan and the Downtown Strategy will be developed over the next 18 months. The process will start with a public open house on December 2, 2025, at the Madison Concourse Hotel.
