UVA scientists make breakthrough in rare blood cancer treatment

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – A new breakthrough treatment born at UVA is giving hope to patients with one of the deadliest forms of blood cancer.

The FDA just approved ziftomenid, a once-a-day pill for people with a rare type of acute myeloid leukemia, especially those whose cancer comes back or doesn’t respond to other treatments.

The drug works by blocking a protein that lets cancer cells grow, giving the body a chance to make healthy blood cells again…
