Suspicious couple arrested after crashing into wire fence on Lake Ella Road

An Oxford man and his female companion were arrested while walking in the opposite direction of the car they crashed into a wire fence.

Deputies responded to a crash involving 29-year-old Nicholas Gene Darnell and 36-year-old Magen Elizabeth Churchill at Cherry Lake and Lake Ella Roads around 7 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Dispatch advised that a witness saw Churchill holding a flashlight across the road from the accident, the report said. Indeed, they found her and Darnell walking on Lake Ella Road near Micro Racetrack Road. They were headed in the opposite direction of the crash, and when asked about it, Churchill stated, “I didn’t crash in the car.”

She added that they were walking and arguing, and she did not call 911 because she did not have a phone. When asked where they were coming from, Darnell said, “Wildwood.” They both denied being in any vehicle-related accident, the report said…
