Why is Traffic Light Timing So Poor in San Diego?

For over a decade, I have made San Diego my home. During this time, I’ve also had the opportunity to live in five other cities including South Jersey, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, and Salt Lake City. One thing that has always struck me about San Diego, as compared to these other cities, is the poor timing of the traffic lights. It’s a common occurrence to proceed on a green light, only to be halted by a red light just a few feet away. This has led me to question why traffic light timing is so problematic in San Diego. Could it be due to the city’s geography, its history, or is it simply a result of poor urban planning?…
