Public viewing for Elzie Odom, late former Arlington mayor, to be held Wednesday

Residents are invited to pay their respects to Elzie Odom, Arlington’s first Black mayor and city council member, in a public viewing from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Arlington Council Chamber on West Abram Street. Odom, a well-respected community leader, died last week at 96.

His funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church on West Sanford Street. There will also be a visitation period beforehand, from 10 a.m. until the service.

Odom served Arlington for 14 years as an elected official — first as a councilman, elected in 1990, and then as mayor, elected in 1977…
