‘I had 30 minutes left to live’: Brentwood man reunites with stranger who saved him in River Des Peres flood

ST. LOUIS — The last thing 54-year-old Rob Hanselman remembers is stepping into the woods near his Brentwood home on a rainy November 2024 morning, the kind of rain that turns creeks into rivers and rivers into something far more dangerous.

He doesn’t remember the floodwaters rising. He doesn’t remember being swept nearly four miles downstream. He doesn’t remember the 48 hours he spent trapped, freezing, tangled in thick brush along the banks of the River Des Peres.

But he knows one thing with absolute clarity: the paramedics told him he had no more than 30 minutes left to live…
