Las Vegas churches unite for interfaith food drive

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Two faiths in Las Vegas marked a new milestone by teaming up to organize a food drive.

The Archdiocese of Las Vegas and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) came together Tuesday morning for their first collaborative food drive, marking a new milestone of interfaith cooperation in Southern Nevada.

A full semi-truck full of over 32,000 pounds of food was delivered for distribution through Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and Catholic food pantries at Parishes across the valley ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

The food came from the LDS Bishops’ Central Storehouse in Salt Lake City, Utah. Volunteers from both faith communities then worked side by side to break down pallets, prepare shipments, and coordinate deliveries to local parishes and outreach programs.

“Today, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Catholic community stand together in friendship and thanksgiving, united in serving those who hunger for nourishment, compassion, and hope,” Bishop Gregory W. Gordon, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas said.
