Ann Arbor’s Pioneer High Teacher Honored with Statewide Excellence in Education Award

Sean Sabo, an advanced placement English and acting teacher at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, has received the Michigan Lottery’s Excellence in Education award. Sabo has taught for nearly 30 years and focuses on developing students’ writing and critical thinking skills. Pioneer High School is part of the Ann Arbor Public Schools district in Washtenaw County.

The Michigan Lottery created the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to recognize public-school educators in Michigan. Each weekly winner receives a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one winner is named Educator of the Year and receives an additional $10,000. Winners are also featured in news segments on Michigan television stations. Sabo’s segment is scheduled to air this evening.

Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli noted Sabo’s long teaching career and his approach to teaching literature and acting. Sabo’s teaching style includes using a variety of literature and encouraging students to write and perform.
