DHS says it met deadline to move foster care kids out of hotels, other unlicensed settings

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Two months after FOX45 News first reported the death of a teen girl in Maryland’s foster care system, the state met a deadline to no longer place children in hotels.

Kanaiyah Ward, 16, was found dead in a Baltimore City hotel on Sept. 22, 2025. FOX45 News first reported her death on Sept. 24. A month later, the Department of Human Services announced it would end hotel placements and implemented a Nov. 24 deadline to move kids out of hotel rooms around the state.

“We have met our deadline to end hotel stays for youth in our care,” DHS Spokesperson Lilly Price said. “There are no youth in hotels, shelters, or offices.”…
