NEWMAN — The Newman community is mourning the loss of Melvin Joseph Souza, a longtime firefighter and former chief whose decades of service left an indelible mark on the city he called home.
Souza, who passed away peacefully on Nov. 11 at the age of 86, served with the Newman Fire Department for 42 years, including 26 years as Fire Chief. Known for his courage, commitment, and deep compassion, Souza was a pillar of public safety and community spirit.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of former Fire Chief Melvin Souza,” the Newman Firefighters Association shared in a statement. “Chief Souza dedicated decades of his life to protecting the place we call home.
