Motorcyclist charged with vehicular homicide after hitting Des Moines teen in September

DES MOINES, Iowa — New charges have been filed in connection with a deadly September motorcycle crash that resulted in the death of a Des Moines teen.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said that Kaelin M. Meinders, 23, turned himself in at the Polk County Jail early Wednesday morning on charges of homicide by vehicle-reckless driving, operating while under the influence 2nd offense, and person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons. He was previously charged with driving while barred-habitual offender, no insurance-causing an accident, and reckless driving.

According to the PCSO, Meinders, of Albia, was operating a motorcycle on September 20th around 11:00 p.m. when he struck Santiago Rhone, 15. The criminal complaint filed in the case said the incident happened in the parking lot of 4950 NE 29th Street, while the lot “was congested with vehicle and pedestrian traffic.”

Witnesses told investigators Meinders performed a “wheelie” before hitting Rhone.

Despite lifesaving efforts by deputies who arrived at the scene, Rhone died from his injuries at a local hospital…
