‘Don’t feel safe’: McMinnville students protest ICE arrest

McMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — Nearly 300 students from McMinnville High School walked out of school Monday morning to protest the ICE arrest of a fellow student last week and demanded ICE leave the city.

The 17-year-old was arrested Friday while on his lunch break. Border Patrol agents said they called in ICE after 2 vehicles barricaded their SUV. Officials with the Department of Homeland Security said both drivers — the McMinnville teen and a 20-year-old named Eduardo Soto Elias — were arrested for allegedly impeding federal officers.

Authorities said both were taken to the Portland ICE facility for processing and released. It is unclear at this time if any federal charges have been brought against them.

“Honestly, after what happened to that kid, the 17 year old, I don’t feel safe going to school,” McMinnville High student Alexis Hernandez Flores told KOIN 6 News. “I don’t feel safe walking the streets of McMinnville no more.”
