SARATOGA SPRINGS — Most, but not all, of the funding for a 24/7 low-barrier homeless shelter was restored to the city’s 2026 budget. But it won’t be enough to sustain it through the end of next year, according to the facility’s director.
The city’s $63.52 million budget, which passed by a vote of 4-1 on Thursday, includes $400,000 for RISE Housing and Support Services’ shelter on Adelphi Street. The allotment — $100,000 less than what the city normally contributes — will only be enough to keep the shelter running through October. When that money runs out, the shelter will permanently close, its executive director, Sybil Newell, said.
“RISE is very pleased to see the funding restored in the city’s budget for the Adelphi Street Shelter,” Executive Director Sybil Newell said in a statement. “RISE provided the city with a revised 10-month budget, and the projected plan is to have RISE wind down services within those 10 months. We will collaborate with Shelters of Saratoga so they have time to budget and plan ahead so they are not overwhelmed at the start of Code Blue next winter.”…
