Charlotte Defies ICE — Residents Urged to Stay Calm

In North Carolina, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden reported his office has been briefed but will not participate in enforcement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Charlotte officials, led by Mayor Vi Lyles, warned the operation could heighten fear and uncertainty. They noted that similar efforts elsewhere have resulted in detentions of people without criminal records.

Lyles said, “I understand this news will create uncertainty and anxiety for many people in our community.” She added, “Everyone in our community deserves to feel secure, and I am committed to doing all that I can to inform our community, help make sure everyone feels safe, and understands their rights.”
